How to Work Through a Course (Learning Workflow)

This course is organized into a series of Modules, each focused on a specific set of skills used when creating utility patent drawings.
The structure is consistent and predictable, so you always know what to expect as you progress.

Each Module focuses on a specific area, allowing you to build skills step by step.

Most Modules in this course contain two main sections:

  1. Theory Section — where you learn the concepts
  2. Practice Section — where you apply the concepts through tasks and exercises

Module Structure Overview

  • Module 1 is theory-only
  • Module 2 begins with a short theory-only introduction, then combines theory and practice
  • Modules 3 and 4 are primarily hands-on, combining theory and practice
  • Module 5 is different and contains Final Projects and Certifications

1. Theory Section

The Theory section introduces the concepts and methods you will use.

It includes:

  • A main Overview video
  • Short, focused text explanations
  • Silent demonstration videos that show the exact steps

The goal of the Theory section is to understand what you will do and why it matters before moving into hands-on work.

2. Practice Section

The Practice section is where you apply the concepts directly in Microsoft Visio.

You will:

  • Download the Module assignment package
  • Extract the Visio file and required stencils
  • Complete Task E1 (a guided, step-by-step exercise)
  • Complete Tasks E2–EN independently
  • Watch Solution Walkthroughs to compare your work
  • Upload your completed assignment if your instructor requires it

This consistent practice sequence helps deepen understanding and build proficiency.

For most learners, the most effective workflow is:

  • Primary device: your computer running Microsoft Visio
  • Secondary device: a tablet or laptop displaying the course content

This setup allows you to watch demonstrations and follow instructions without switching windows while working in Visio.

Task Structure

Task E1 — Guided Practice

Task E1 is a structured, step-by-step walkthrough.

Each activity in Task E1 includes:

  • A short written explanation
  • A silent demonstration video
  • An optional “Need More Help?” section

You will read, watch, and perform each activity yourself inside the Visio exercise file.

Tasks E2–EN — Independent Practice

These tasks reinforce the techniques learned in Task E1.

For each task:

  1. Attempt it independently in Visio
  2. Watch the Solution Walkthrough
  3. Compare your results
  4. Reflect and refine your approach

Uploading Your Work

If your instructor requires assignments to be submitted:

  • Save your completed Visio file
  • Upload it through the LMS
  • Your instructor will review your work and provide feedback

🔴 Important: Module 5 Works Differently

Unlike Modules 1–4, Module 5 does not follow the Theory → Practice → E1/E2 workflow.

Instead, Module 5 contains Final Projects and Certification Tracks, which vary depending on your selected Learning Path or institutional requirements.

In Module 5, you will:

  • Download a Final Project package for your certification track
  • Complete the required drawing or reviewing assignment
  • Follow a certification checklist
  • Upload your final work for assessment (if required)

Your instructor or your selected Learning Path determines which certifications appear for you.

Summary

  • Module 1: Theory-only foundation
  • Module 2: Theory introduction, then theory + practice
  • Modules 3–4: Theory + hands-on practice
  • Module 5: Certification final projects

Once you complete your first hands-on unit, the structure of the remaining Modules will feel familiar, clear, and easy to follow.
