Welcome to Patent Drawing School – Visio Edition
This course provides a structured, professional training program for creating, editing, and reviewing utility patent drawings using Microsoft Visio. You’ll learn practical skills you can use immediately—whether you’re preparing an invention disclosure, documenting research, or creating drawings for a patent filing.
No Visio or design experience required. You are not expected to be an artist. You are not expected to “figure things out” on your own.
Everything in this course is taught step by step, using real patent-drawing scenarios and practical examples.
In this training, you will learn:
- The difference between utility and design drawings, what formal vs. informal figures mean, and the basic techniques used in real patent drawings.
- The key USPTO and international rules for sheets, lines, reference numbers, text size, and how figures should be organized.
- The essential parts of Microsoft Visio needed for patent drawings — we skip the unnecessary features and focus only on what you’ll actually use.
- How to create flowcharts, system diagrams, tables, graphs, GUI screens, and traced images directly in Visio.
- How to add reference numbers, lead lines, figure numbers, and other annotations quickly using custom toolkit stencils.
- How to capture ideas fast, update existing drawings, and prepare figures suitable for class projects, research, industry work, or patent filings.
This course teaches you the drawing skills. Your instructor will guide you through the assignments, explain how everything fits into your program, and help you apply these skills to your projects or research.
The exact skills you develop depend on your Learning Path, but every path is designed to deliver immediate, real-world value.

You will inspect a full drawing set and identify format errors, numbering issues, rule violations, and inconsistencies.
Your instructor will advise which certification(s) apply to your program.
If you are self-studying, you may choose any path that aligns with your goals.
