In this exercise, you will learn to navigate patent figures efficiently using zooming techniques to inspect reference numbers with precision. By focusing on zooming as your primary navigation tool, you will compare a reference image with a completed drawing to identify correct matches and discrepancies.
💡 Multi-Device Tip: For the best experience, use your primary computer (with Visio and a mouse) for working on the practice file, and a secondary device (tablet, smartphone, laptop, or second monitor) to view step-by-step instructions and demonstration videos.
💡 Note: While a touchpad can be used, we strongly recommend using a mouse for tasks involving patent figures. Unlike word processing or spreadsheets, graphical work requires the precision and efficiency that a mouse provides.

2 Complete Task E1
Follow the steps below as a general guide to complete Task E1. If you have a secondary device, refer to the detailed demonstration videos on it as you perform the tasks on your primary computer.
In this practice, you’ll use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out between a reference image (left) and a completed patent figure (right). Your goal is to inspect and compare reference numbers on both sides—then document any mismatches.
Use only zooming techniques (not panning or selecting) to carefully move between the reference and completed drawings. Identify any mismatched reference numbers and enter them into the designated area above the diagram.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Task E1:
- Zoom out to identify the area you want to inspect in the reference image.
- Zoom into the reference image to find a number.
- Zoom out to identify the corresponding area in the completed patent figure.
- Zoom into the completed figure to inspect it.
- Compare and note mismatches.
- Repeat for all numbers.
💡 Complete all steps using only the mouse wheel and Ctrl key—no panning or scrolling.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Task E1:
-
Step 1: Zoom Out to Get an Overview
🎯 Goal: See both the reference and completed diagrams clearly.
- Hover your cursor between the reference diagram (left) and work diagram (right).
- Hold `Ctrl` and scroll downward to zoom out.
- Stop when both diagrams are clearly visible on screen.
-
Step 2: Zoom In on the Reference Image
🎯 Goal: Find and inspect a reference number in the reference image.
- Hover your cursor over the left-side image.
- Hold `Ctrl` and scroll upward to zoom in.
- Stop when reference numbers are easy to read.
- Choose the next number to inspect (go in order from smallest to largest).
-
Step 3: Zoom Out to Reposition
🎯 Goal: Reposition your view toward the completed figure.
- Move your cursor to the right-side diagram.
- Hold `Ctrl` and scroll downward to zoom out.
- Stop when the entire completed figure is visible.
-
Step 4: Zoom In on the Completed Figure
🎯 Goal: Compare the selected number in both diagrams.
- Hover your cursor over the corresponding number in the completed diagram.
- Hold `Ctrl` and scroll upward to zoom in.
- Compare the number:
- If it matches → move on.
- If it doesn’t match → note the mismatch.
- Return to Step 1 and repeat for the next number.
-
Step 5: Record Mismatches
🎯 Goal: List all mismatched numbers in the designated area.
- Once you’ve inspected all reference numbers:
- Enter the incorrect ones at the top of the completed diagram.
- Be sure to double-check spelling and spacing.
Final Check & Summary
